The Art of Kunqu (Kun Opera) Performance

Ms. Yue Meiti is one of China’s leading Kunqu artists. Kunqu, which has a 600-year history and is considered “the mother of one hundred opera forms,” was designated one of the “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2001. Ms. Yue graduated in the first class of the prestigious Shanghai Opera School headed by Master Yu Zhenfei (1902–1993).

She is recognized as the foremost female performer of xiaosheng (young male) roles, and has been designated a National Treasure for her Kunqu artistry.
