A movement for historical preservation is taking hold in China as people increasingly recognize how the country’s historical character has been sacrificed to economic development. For example, about 75 percent of the old city of Beijing has vanished—including hundreds of Ming-dynasty dwellings. Between 1995 and 2006, Elizabeth Gill Lui photographed historic architecture in China while she was a visiting artist at the Chinese University in Hong Kong School of Architecture. In this talk, she will discuss the challenges that China faces in balancing historic preservation with accelerated development. Colorado-based Gill Lui is an internationally recognized fine art photographer and educator. Her books include Building Diplomacy, The Architecture of American Embassies (Cornell University Press, 2004); and Open Hearts Open Doors, published last November by Cornell University Press.
