Professor Ota's research interests include integration of technology in the teaching of East Asian languages, Chinese dialects (especially Taiwanese Hokkien and Cantonese), orthographic issues associated with Chinese characters, and the sociolinguistics of Chinese speaking communities. He also teaches Taiwanese Hokkien classes with Prof. Ying-che Li.
