The Chinese Bridge program provides opportunities for U.S. high school students to have a two-and-a-half week Chinese language and culture learning experience in China. Sponsored by China’s National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (a.k.a. “Hanban”), and organized by the Confucius Institute.
High school students with no or minimum experience in Chinese are selected to participate in a three-week residential program on the UHM campus to acquire basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture skills in Mandarin Chinese. Participants learn language alongside table tennis and martial arts under the tutelage of championship level instructors. Language lessons bracket the sports sessions, and will consist of interactive, task-based exercises designed to encourage learners to communicate in Chinese. Weekend excursions to sites around scenic Honolulu led by native speakers of Chinese provide additional practice.
Funded by the Freeman Foundation, CLTE is specifically designed and dedicated to meet the high demand of teaching Chinese language in Hawai'i and beyond. We offer workshops in fundamental training for teaching Chinese in K-12, as well as certificate programs.
We offer classes in Mandarin Chinese language to members of the University and local community. Class levels range from Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.
