The Confucius Institute at the University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa (CI-UHM) will organize a summer educational tour for high school students from Hawai‘i during Summer 2009. These students will participate in the “Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for U.S. High School Students” sponsored by China’s National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (a.k.a. “Hanban”), under China’s Ministry of Education. The Chinese Bridge program provides opportunities for U.S. high school students to have a two-and-a-half week Chinese language and culture learning experience in China. This year’s program dates will be July 7–26.
The cost will be $1,600, which will cover airfare, program costs, and travel within China. Limited need-based financial assistance may be available.

The cost for chaperone teachers will be covered by the program. The number of teacher chaperones will be determined by the numbers of students enrolled in the program.

To help education decision-makers start or expand a Chinese language program, the College Board and the PRC Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) will once again invite U.S. educators to China for a one-week educational tour. Launched in 2006, this annual program offers district leaders, principals, and policy makers a chance to learn firsthand about Chinese culture and language as guests of the Hanban.
